The philosophy of our ministry is to target people’s mindsets and practices. We seek to educate people and communities to do those things that bring about lasting transformation instead of encouraging a culture of handouts. The projects we undertake are those that teach responsibility and selfless service. In Kenya, PA partners with a number of communities to jointly work together on projects that involve the participation of the entire community and contribute to a greater community transformation.
The Dairy Project
PA in partnership with Namawanga community began a dairy project which is growing. Apart from providing 10 dairy cows to the community; we continue to inspire them and train them to turn it into an economic venture. Since its start, the project has transformed lives in a big way. We continue to see the status of poor families changed as they begin to milk a cow and take responsibility for providing for themselves.
It is also exciting to see the beneficiaries practice the principle of giving as they share milk and give their first calf to neighbors to perpetuate the investment. So far we have 20 families who are beneficiaries of this project. We desire to invest more in this project for great impact.
The Youth Poultry Project
Working with youth in the rural communities, we have assisted them to start income generating projects. With only US$ 1,000, over 20 youth have been empowered to undertake a number of investments including poultry keeping, brick making which have empowered them economically.
Today, the poultry project has returned the initial investment put in and is still growing. Every time we go into the communities, the youth are working on new ideas. The exciting part is that now many other youth in the community are being attracted to the idea of coming together to transform their lives. Through the lessons they learn, they are also diversifying their investments with other projects like brick making for greater returns.
The youth business incubator project
Our business entrepreneurship program seeks to inspire the many unemployed youth in Kenya to consider small businesses as a choice economic opportunity. The recent post-election violence in Kenya largely involved the youth who are extremely disillusioned and disenfranchised. With the support of CBMC, PA began a business incubator where we have worked with 7 businesses in the past year, four of them showing good success and sustainability for their business.
In the year 2008/9 we will work to expand this facility and use the same principles to help youth from poor rural communities.
The solar lighting
In partnership with Least of These International, a US non-profit, we began a solar lighting project in the communities where we serve. In these communities, electricity is not accessible. Most families use cloth burning lanterns. The lamps require paraffin that most families can not afford, are unhealthy due to the carbon-dioxide produced and can not produce enough lighting especially for children who need to study and do their homework.
The families that benefited from the solar lighting have seen a tremendous change. One mother told us ‘now my child’s school performance has improved due to the fact that with the solar lighting, they can now study well at night.’
In the year 2008/09 we seek to work with communities to help them establish projects which they have identified and designed as a result of PA training programs. Some of the planned projects include:
-
Expanding the dairy cow project in Namawanga
-
Expanding the youth entrepreneurship project
-
Dairy Goat Project in Mbeere
-
Fish pond and irrigation projects in Ahero
-
Water reservoir projects in the arid areas of Mbeere
